All tourists coming to Ha Giang need to have permits which can be obtain at Ha Giang police station in Ha Giang town, with this permit travellers are allowed to visit and stay overnight in 4 border districts: Dong Van, Meo Vac, Lung Cu and Bac Me, without permit travellers will be sent off the area. Normally travellers coming to Ha Giang from Hanoi, spend the first night in Ha Giang town, apply for permit at police station and continue the trip the next day, permit can be arranged through the hotel or by yourself, note that Ha Giang police station close on Sundays.
Update: International visitors to Ha Giang no longer need permit, except some remote villages.
